Rohloff Maintenance

After 5,000km, the Rohloff needs an oil change. I have spare oil change kits with me and whilst I am stopped in Rabat, Morocco, it’s time for a change.

The procedure is quite simple, the kit contains:

25ml all season oil
25ml cleaning oil (in a 50ml bottle)
60ml syringe
Drain/filling pipe
New oil cap

1. Simply, place the wheel so the drain screw is at the top.
2. Put in the cleaning oil and put the drain screw back in.
3. Ride 1km changing from gear 3 to 5 which ensures all planetary gears are in action/cleaned.
4. Remove drain screw again, connect pipe syringe and ensure its now at the bottom. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to drain to bottom then suck out with syringe.
5. Turn hole back to the top and squirt in the new oil.
6. Replace drain screw with new one provided.
Clean off any spilt oil with a clean rag.
